We all knew that our full-fitting knickers and panties showed up best in pure-white, but some girls loved pastel-coloured knickers as well. Look at all those women enjoying those big, sexy knickers, and I know exactly what they are really thinking, even if each of them would ‘deny everything’ if there was a man within a mile!

Ending with a robe falling to the floor, could this hint that the ladies will be showing a little bit more than what can be seen in the trailer? A life-long collector of all things old and glamorous, Susie started her own vintage clothing business Wake Up Little Susie in 2010. Nearly every woman I knew just loved to remove her skirt or dress and show off her bloomers at any excuse, and the photo shows it was harvest time of year. The short film with a new invention (for 1929), the camiknickers…a precursor to more contemporary teddies, bodysuits, and rompers.and also in the form of the frothiest, frilliest knickers and pants in all the colourful shades you could imagine, as opposed to the basic whites, pinks, and popular peach shades of previous decades. Other highlights for me include the 'petal' tap pants and bandeau bralette (fast forward to about 1:38 to see).

Women started becoming more empowered and undertaking more physical activities, and knickers started to develop into the enclosed garment we know today. This truly was the Mid-Century wonder fabric, a good example of scientific developments influencing fashion, and exploded into the 1950s in the form of full wide petticoats to go under the “New Look” style dresses (thank you to Christian Dior for introducing the flattering, feminine shape using obscenely generous amounts of fabric to twirl away the deprivation of the war years! The commentary on this video is so incredibly bizarre; it's worth listening to, just very obviously from a different place and time. In my village, Mrs B did our laundry, apart from our intimate underwear, and she was always undressed to her knickers whenever I went to collect or deliver our washing.

As a fan of a floaty nightie or a cute pair of PJs, Susie specialises in vintage nightwear and lingerie from all eras which she showcases at her own fashion shows, Pop-Up Boutiques and in themed photoshoots.

Most of our time seemed to be spent dreaming and contriving new ways to safely show flashes of our knickers to our chosen targets, and our knickers were always foremost in our minds. It's only 50 seconds long, but features stunners like eyeball bikinis and swimsuits with attached baseball players (at least, I think that's what that is). During the Second World War, necessity became a big factor in how fashion evolved; material was rationed, the Utility scheme was introduced, and a pair of knickers would have cost you 3 clothing coupons. This was the heyday of French Knickers and Camiknickers, made in silk or rayon and beautifully shaped, with little side button fastenings at the waist, always with the wide legs and often decorated with embroidery and lace trim. I actually adore fuller cut swimsuits like this, but I also think the strappy back details are surprisingly modern. To me, the 1980s became the second heyday of this style of lingerie with glamour models like Samantha Fox bringing our traditional French Knickers into a whole new world of cheeky sexuality, always with a hint of silky, lacy romance and opulence.

I grew up knowing that most men adored women’s bloomers, and of course, girl’s knickers, too, and I soon discovered that life in a remote, country village was far more knickers-orientated than any town or city, anywhere! While there aren't as many vintage lingerie videos as there are for, say, "regular" fashion, I thought these 12 were worth a look. I also discovered a while ago that undies of this style are generally referred to as “Tap Pants” in the States; when I first spotted this term in a vintage Facebook group (and believe me, people in vintage Facebook groups know their stuff!
