Description

The format of the book allows for a conversation with children about managing their feelings 'putting them into bottles' and discussing why they might be feeling a particular emotion. It is written in a very clever way, so that children of all ages can understand and engage with the text. I am organization obsessed, coffee loving, playful therapist who is showing up for life in the north woods of Minnesota.

It might help to have a friend, older brother or sister or a trusted adult help the child to sort out their feelings at those times, just like the Colour Monster and the little girl. As a therapist I left the feeling words blank as to let client creativity lead the way (for older clients more feeling words and younger less) and not to have rigidity about what the feelings should be.

Telling children that blue is sadness will confuse children who experience blue as tranquility, or power, or curiosity, or any number of other emotions. They can either choose to share their picture and why they feel that way or can skip and turn in privately. These are all great things to notice and process along with how it feels in their bodies when the feelings are mixed up, any thoughts that might come up for the Color Monster, and the choices the monster may make when feeling all mixed up! Indeed, on the final page the story doesn't explicitly spell out how the monster feels so children can have fun guessing and questioning what it 'feels' like to be in love!

Does their emotional literacy increase where they could initially name three feelings, but now it’s five? Desde entonces, diseña productos originales, escribe e ilustra libros e imparte cursos de creatividad y emociones.Maybe they could take pictures of what they are eating and make a Rainbow Food Diary to share with everyone. Parents may want to read the story again with the children or invite the children to tell them the story, using their own home-made monsters from last week’s resources. When I am reading this with young people after I will pause, ask them what they noticed, and most of the time go into a Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy activity about feeling identification and levels!

By illustrating such common emotions as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and calm, this sensitive book gently encourages young children to open up with parents, teachers, and daycare providers. You could ask them to draw a colour monster of their own and colour it in the different colours for their emotions. When I read this together with a group of friends, we had a lengthy discussion before we even opened the book about whether there were four monsters or one with different personalities, and therefore able to begin to make predictions about what might happen.I love exploring this book with children and I can’t wait to share it with more children in the future.
