The best recent crime and thrillers – review roundup

Little-known right to help YOU beat NHS waiting lists without having to wait for hospitals to invite you. Conflict mediator Lindi and her childhood friend Kagiso find themselves in the heart of the chaos, fighting to save themselves and their country as events are set in motion that no one - least of all they - can control. It is easy to see who a conflict could escalate after one idealistic person does something inappropriate. However as Alagiah draws the reader further into the story, it becomes a really compelling read, and I completed it in just over a day! This is both an enjoyable and unsettling read and I appreciated learning more about the country's history and the atmosphere Alagiah creates is impressive. Coloured no doubt by George Alagiah’s own life experiences, and with the thoroughness of his journalistic background, The Burning Land is an exploration of post-apartheid South Africa, still torn apart by rivalries and greed, and the inequalities created by ‘land reform’. The pair pass the narrative baton between them for a largely successful foray into Girl on the Train territory, replete with jealousy, stalking, gaslighting and control-freakery, although habitual readers of psychological thrillers may find the reveal, when it comes, to be something of a let-down.

Although the cult itself is not entirely convincing, the novel is a very good study of vulnerability, and how our best intentions can often lead us astray. Swapping the mango trees of Ghana for an inner-city British Catholic boarding school, aged 11, was a shock to my system. It would appear to the reader that the freedom fighters' quest for an all-inclusive and just South Africa was only partly fulfilled. As a journalist, I try hard to discover the facts, the things you can see, touch and measure; As a novelist, I've tried to find the truth, something more elusive, less tangible. I enjoy reading internationally and this book certainly provided an interesting armchair trip to South Africa. Increasingly isolated, she spends a lot of the day in pyjamas, listening out for Harriet, her glamorous, party-giving neighbour, and envying her. When she hijacks a mothers’ book club by initiating a wine-fuelled game of confession (“What’s the worst thing you ever did?

There is an attempt at a plot twist near the end but the possibility that things happened the way they do has already been mentioned earlier, which considerably blunts the effect of surprise. The author George Alagiah is a very well respected BBC journalist and frequent presenter of the news. The author asks a series of questions, many of a philosophical nature, throughout the narrative which provided much food for thought. Had I joined then, I’d have entered a very white world, dominated by people from a certain class and set of institutions. He's won numerous awards, including The Royal Television Society and Amnesty International among others.

Beautiful imagery of South Africa and a familiarity with the people brought this book to life while the story line moved at a rapid pace. Following the murder of the son of a prominent black South African businessman, Lindi’s boss asks her to visit South Africa to contact a group known as The Land Collective, who are being linked to the murder. My only negative is that there are a lot of characters to get your head round and it takes a while to establish who is who. There seemed something so powerful in a new life entering the world while another, mine, was so compromised. Tyler Christopher's tragic life: General Hospital star who was married to Eva Longoria admitted he 'flatlined' three times in the grips of alcohol addiction. The back stories of certain characters take up many pages while others only get a few brush strokes, sometimes much too late in the narrative.
