My body has incubated, born and nourished my favourite thing in the world, so the least I can do is cut the trash talk. Not a single guffaw to be had throughout the entire book and the only good thing that came out of it was the mention of Jessica Simpson's book (Open Book) being "just wow" and the nosey b in me read that next and it was a much more enjoyable and heartfelt read which I would highly recommend over this rubbish! Regardless, even if you think it won’t be relatable to you, I still recommend it for Ellie’s audio performance.A regular guest on panel shows, she created and starred in her own comedy short ELLIE SOLVES PARENTING on Sky One. Unfortunately though, I think I went into the book expecting more of an argument exploring both sides of the choice to have children and this wasn't really the case; if you go into the book wanting or not wanting children, I feel it won't do a drastic amount to change your perspective either way.

All these are examples of uncertainty and can help your child to start seeing an uncertain future as less threatening. Before I had my daughter, I was told by some local parents that if I wanted to secure a spot at one of the neighbourhood’s good nurseries and not one of the places that was essentially a primary-colour painted gulag, I should really have started putting my name on waiting lists shortly before I sat my GCSEs. Her honest, hilarious and moving account of the whys and hows of having a baby makes perfect reading for expectant mothers and fathers everywhere, as well as those who’ve been there, done that, and wonder how on earth they did. As the mother of a 2-year-old girl, who must have been born not too long after Ellie's daughter, I really enjoyed looking back at that period of time in my own life, through another woman's perspective. There is definitely room for a genuine, warm, funny “nobody told me” style narrative on conception, pregnancy and new motherhood but for me, this didn’t nail it.

Just as my neighbours foretold, one of the nurseries I visited – a fancy hippy place which boasted an organic plant-based menu prepared by an ex-Ottolenghi chef – told me during a tour of the facility that, in all honesty, I was unlikely to ever get a space for this child, but if I went on to have a second one then I could transfer our place on the waiting list to that hypothetical baby instead. But while I am still more than happy to bask in the glow of any success of my own making, overshadowing that is the utter elation I feel when witnessing my daughter’s tiny achievements.
