Right now, it feels as though every week another core British institution disappears from our high streets. You can keep up with all the planned closures here. While Paperchase’s flower-shaped rubbers might not be widely missed, its cards certainly will be. “The quality of the cards it sold was extremely high, although it was very expensive for a silly little birthday card,” says Lucy Shearer, 27. “But I feel like if you needed a last-minute one you could rely on Paperchase to have exactly what you needed.” Talking of paper, if you need to print out documents then do consider shifting away from standard printer paper to using recycled printer paper. If you don’t want inky fingers, I quite like these VENT for Change pens from Ethical Superstore. These are made from recycled plastic and can be recycled again. For me as a teenager, this shop felt like the height of sophistication. The shop sold a large assortment of stationery that no one needed but everyone wanted, from shimmering notebooks to pencils with oversized rubbers on the end, all somehow cooler than those to be found at Scribbler. Then there were the Christmas cards with moustaches on. Every Christmas, my older sister would impress the family by bringing home a selection of these cards, all the way from Leeds.

Where would you go to get a birthday card that was nice, and not obviously grabbed from a Sainsbury’s Local? The answer is, or rather was, Paperchase. Its selection of quirky cards and stationery items lined train stations and highstreets across the UK.

Now that it's officially exam season, students across the UK will be sitting down to revise all kinds of course content. Sure, it can be a daunting and stressful task at times, but half the battle is discovering which revision methods work best for you, and what stationery you'll need to get the job done. I’m working on finding eco-friendly printer ink, so I’ll be sure to update this article when I find some that I recommend.

Scented pens, novelty rubbers, rainbow highlighters and another adorable patterned notebook that will never be filled? Yes please. There’s a different kind of dopamine hit that comes from purchasing new stationery. That’s why it felt like such a big loss when it seemed like beloved stationery store Paperchase could disappear from our high streets altogether. For notes or doodles that you don’t want to erase, then Wipebook has thought of that. The freeWipebook Scan Appsaves your work and uploads it to your favourite cloud service. This includes services like Google Drive, Evernote, Dropbox, and Onedrive, so you don’t lose your work. Concerned about paper waste? Enter Wipebook, who seek to make stationery more sustainable through their clever reusable notebooks. Having tried using fountain pens, let’s just say I can see why the world moved on to ballpoint pens. There’s definitely a learning curve associated with fountain pens. I have to say I just never mastered it. Charley has an MA in Journalism & Media Studies and undertook an internship at a travel magazine in Iceland. She still writes occasional travel and lifestyle stories when the inspiration strikes now, with work published in Cosmopolitan, Stylist, ELLE and Women’s Health, among others. When it comes to eco-friendly stationery, it’s challenging to find a truly sustainable pen, because like in many areas of life, none on the market are perfectly sustainable. We bought it last year and had mixed feelings about the content. The quality was fantastic but we were a bit disappointed with the inclusion of wrapping paper, gift tags, Christmas cards and ribbon. Whether you are taking notes in a meeting, working out problems, or sketching down ideas, the Wipebook is a great solution for an eco-friendly home office. Once you’ve typed up your notes, simply erase them and start again, without any waste.
