The production qualities though are very high in a performance that both looks and sounds tremendous. This results from the combination of movement choreographed by Javier De Frutos, video from Tal Rosner and incredibly varied music composed by William Lyons supplemented by some popular favourites. In May and June, York, Chester, Coventry and other cities put on cycle plays that dramatised biblical narratives from Creation to Doomsday. Audiences could watch saints’ lives, plays about the cult hero Robin Hood, and morality plays such as Mankind, The Castle of Perseverance and Everyman in which good and evil battle it out for the hero’s soul. In 2015, Duffy was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the British Academy. [16] Poet laureate [ edit ] Carol Ann Duffy, one of the most significant names in contemporary British poetry, has achieved that rare feat of both critical and commercial success. Her work is read and enjoyed equally by critics, academics and lay readers, and it features regularly on both university syllabuses and school syllabuses. Some critics have accused Duffy of being too populist, but on the whole her work is highly acclaimed for being both literary and accessible, and she is regarded as one of Britain’s most well-loved and successful contemporary poets.

Javier De Frutos choreographs proceedings in lively ways and there is exceptional lighting from Paul Anderson. Everyman then turns to Good Deeds, who says she would go with him, but she is too weak as Everyman has not loved her in his life. Good Deeds summons her sister Knowledge to accompany them, and together they go to see Confession. In the presence of Confession, Everyman begs God for forgiveness and repents his sins, punishing himself with a scourge. After his scourging, Everyman is absolved of his sins, and as a result, Good Deeds becomes strong enough to accompany Everyman on his journey with Death. [8] Politics by Carol Ann Duffy". Rivera manages to strike the right balance for Everyman; not so smarmy as to become irredeemably unsympathetic, but flawed enough to suggest that the threat to his mortal soul is very real. The rest of the cast carry the narrative with spirited aplomb and artistry, taking on a number of roles as Everyman’s journey rolls toward eternity. Apollinaire Theatre Company has done delightful justice to Duffy’s zesty rejuvenation of a didactic dramatic chestnut.

Norris throws everything at the production: a large ensemble, high wire antics, the singing of show tunes, cascades of glitter, a wind machine that pushes fake currency and air into the auditorium, cocaine use, rainfall, walking on broken bottles, multi-media activity, the C word, an orgy (of sorts) involving multiple sexuality combinations, many giant gold statues, fluro costumes, a flow of bubbles and garish golden outfits. It’s almost as if he doesn’t trust the material to make its own impact.

I present a series of evenings at our partner venue, the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, under the heading "Carol Ann Duffy and Friends". These evenings featuring guest appearances from poets of national stature reading alongside the best students and graduates from our MFA and MA Creative Writing: Poetry programme. This gives our students the experience of taking part in a professionally-staged literary event, and helps them to develop their skills in presenting their work to a public audience. In 2018I started the People's Poetry Lectures: today’s leading writers talking about their favourite poets at Manchester's iconic Principal Hotel. A prologue, read by the Messenger asks the audience to give their attention and announces the purpose of the play, which will show us our lives as well as our deaths (“our ending”) and how we humans are always (“all day”) transitory: changing from one state into another. de Vocht, Henry (1947), Everyman : A Comparative Study of Texts and Sources, Material for the Study of the Old English Drama, vol.20, Louvain: Librairie Universitaire
