Description

The smallest dog living, in terms of height, is a female Chihuahua called Milly, who measured 9.65 cm (3.8 in) tall on 21 February 2013. Three DARPA-funded research teams have completed a foundational study of chip-scale vacuum pumps by inventing three very different approaches to removing air from a sample chamber with a volume of one cubic millimeter, which is about one-tenth the volume of a grain of rice. These new technologies will enable many micro-scale devices which require a vacuum or a controlled flow of gas, such as Lab-on-a-Chip sensors, radio frequency MEMS switches and microscopic vacuum tubes. Why is DARPA interested in tiny devices that operate in a vacuum? Over the past quarter of a century, a host of MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) and other devices have been developed. Many of these devices require microscale pumps for their operation, such as the various Lab-on-a-Chip analytical sensors, which must pump air or liquid samples through a series of testing stations on the chip. This requires real-time in-situ pumping capacity, as do the maintenance procedures performed between measurements. The Miele Triflex HX2 Pro is the brand's most powerful vacuum cleaner. It's a solid bit of kit, easy to manoeuvre and with the ability to detect when you transition from carpet to hard floor. However, the small dust canister and short battery life cloud what is otherwise a superb cordless vacuum cleaner.

We test all the best vacuum cleaners in our homes, so we know how well they perform in the real world –a world where kids and pets and partners create all kinds of messes for these cleaners to cope with. We test their cleaning power, of course. But we also test to see how comfortable they are, how heavy they are to hold and whether they can reach places that other cleaner can't. IBM Research Laboratories in San Jose, California, USA managed to combine science and art by breaking the record for the smallest stop-motion film. DARPA sought a vacuum system no bigger than a US penny that is able to produce a vacuum of less than 100 microPascals (uPa, a billionth of atmospheric pressure) in a vacuum chamber with at least a cubic millimeter of volume (about the size of a grain of coarse sand). The vacuum system was to use less than a quarter of a watt, and contain instruments to accurately measure the pressure in the chamber.

As we’ve mentioned already, knowing which type of vacuum to choose can end up leaving you confused. However, considering the type of property you have will help you decide.

There are also microscale components that require a vacuum environment for proper operation, such as radio frequency MEMS switches, microscopic vacuum tubes, and other parts that depend on electron or ion optics. Simply sealing the devices while in a vacuum chamber often does not give sufficient service life, as leaks and degassing are far more detrimental to vacuum devices on the microscale. Accordingly, such components may need a vacuum pump on the chip to maintain functionality.

When Milly (or Miracle Milly as per her name on her pedigree) was born on 1 December 2011, she weighed less than one ounce (28 g), could fit in a teaspoon and had to be fed with an eyedropper. The individual molecules of carbon monoxide were placed as pixels on a copper sheet to create each frame of the film. The molecules were positioned using a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM), which uses an ultra-fine metal tip to move the molecules with electrical charge.

Whichever style you select, consider whether the dust canister is large enough to clean all of the floors in your home, without needing to stop and be emptied half way through. In October 2008 scientists announced they had discovered the first ecosystem on Earth which has only one species. It comprised of 242 individual frames with a frame size of only 45 nanometres by 25 nanometres (45 x 25 billionths of a metre). How the film was made As you'd expect from Miele this is exceptionally well made and feels like it'll last for decades. Which sadly is more than we can say for the battery: we ran out of power before we completed a full clean of our home, so we were glad for the included second battery. However, it is a bulky appliance so it may be a problem to store. We were also disappointed there were no LEDs on the floor cleaning head - a feature offered by some vacuums in this list - which makes it easier when cleaning in dark spaces under furniture.Shark and Dyson are two of the biggest names dominating the floor care market right now, so if you’re considering kitting your home out with a powerful new vacuum, it makes sense to opt for one of these brands. But which is best?
