As Draper puts it "The Grey Lantern is like a comic-book hero – the album is about this village of people with really disgusting morals & the Grey Lantern sorts them out. I suppose the Grey Lantern's me. I wouldn't have a cape, but there are definitely characters on the record – Albert Taxloss, Chad, Dark Mavis. At the end of the album, it all gets resolved & you find Mavis is actually the Stripper Vicar."

The songs themselves were guitar-driven with a playful, experimental edge. The band’s use of orchestral strings, ambient noise and sideways lyrics led to them becoming leading players in what the British music press somewhat unconvincingly called New Grave (alongside supposedly similar moodists Placebo and Radiohead). The Chad Who Loved Me has more than a hint of Ride’s Leave Them All Behind, while Disgusting carries traces of late-80s Tears for Fears in its bold ambition. Draper could certainly write killer singles. Taxloss was a near-perfect conflation of The Beatles and the Stones, borrowing from Taxman and We Love You respectively. Wide Open Space was blissful pop with a soaring solo from guitarist Dominic Chad, soon adopted by the clubland massive thanks to Paul Oakenfold’s dance remix. Dark Mavis’ originally had a hip hop groove and some exceptional swearing that was rejected by the record company” Paul Lester (24 August 2007). Other than the prog reference, due to the diverse range of music styles and the bands hard to pin-down image it was difficult to categorise or pigeon-hole them. One of the reasons I was first drawn to the band. Right from the outset, you are drawn in by The Chad Who Loved Me’s lush and sweeping orchestral introduction all the way through to the epic closer Dark Mavis/An Open Letter to the Lyrical Trainspotter which, tongue firmly in cheek, dismisses the lyrics of the album –”The lyrics aren’t supposed to mean that much, They’re just a vehicle for a lovely voice, They aren’t supposed to mean that much”

Originally intended as a concept album in which the superhero of the title peeps behind the curtains of a typical English village to reveal the strange practices of its inhabitants, the idea remained unfinished when composer and lead vocalist Paul Draper simply lost interest. Rather than scrap the whole project Draper decided to keep the completed material and intersperse it with songs unrelated to the main storyline. The result is a kind of musical collage with recurring characters such as Penelope Cheapskate, Albert Taxloss, Dark Mavis and a cross-dressing vicar with a penchant for stripping. It should be an unholy mess but, in a bizarre way, it reflects the eccentric nature of the English, right down to the opaque nature of the lyrics. It was announced in May 2003 that the band had split up earlier that year, whilst in the process of recording their fourth album, and some of their archival recording of the album later released on their final album, Kleptomania (2004).In March 2008, on the prospect of a Mansun reunion, Draper stated that whilst he and Andie Rathbone were interested, "Dominic Chad would never do it, so it can't happen". [25] In 2010, Rathbone commented that it was a "pity the three others couldn't stop dramatising the problems and get out again, as we'd be phenomenal". [56] In 2011 Rathbone again confirmed his and Draper's desire to reform the band, but added that a reunion would have to include all four band members and that neither King nor Chad were interested.
