more than decent field of view. Indeed at 111m @ 1,000 meters (333ft@1000yds), it is wider than some top-end 10x42 binoculars like the impressive Swarovski 10x42 SLC and Opticron 10x42 DBA VHD. Room For Improvement

This is better because it gives you much greater flexibility when choosing exactly the right amount of eye-relief should the maximum or minimum settings not be perfect for your specific face shape or glasses should you wear any. For more see my guide to using binoculars with glasses. Whilst they have a metal bridge, the rest of the chassis on these and indeed all the other new Bresser Condor binoculars is made from a polycarbonate known as PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide). As with my comparison between the 8x42 and 8x56 models, due to the different sized lenses and resulting exit pupil differences, this is one area where I was fully expecting to observe a difference between these and the larger models and this indeed turned out to be the case: These National Geographic Children's binoculars are based on their very successful ExploreOne 6x21 Junior Compact binoculars and are a fully functional roof prism compact binocular that has the optical performance that matches that of a standard 'adult' compact binocular at the same sort of price level. So far I have had the fortune of testing three models (8x56, 8x42, and the 8x32) within the superb line of Pirsch ED binoculars from the German brand Bresser. All of which are truly excellent, but of these, it is the 8x42 Bresser Pirsch ED that has scored slightly higher than the rest with an outstanding 83% on the BBR scale. This family contains a wide range of binoculars, with 7 models (5 porro prism designs and 2 compact roof prisms). Optics on these instruments are fully multi-coated and the higher end models incorporate all-metal aluminium housings and barrels.

All Nautic series models are waterproof (Immersion tested at 1m for 60sec) and have a water resistant and robust rubber armor as well as a gas purged optical tubes and are supplied with a flotation strap. The gas purged filling of the Nautic binoculars prevents water and moisture from entering the binocular by creating an interior pressure capsule and are therefore the ideal binocular for maritime use on board. The 7x magnification model makes it possible to achieve a relatively steady image during rough sea conditions. I also tested them all again once the sun had dipped below the horizon with the light going from what I would describe as poor to extremely poor. True to form, the 8x56 performed best, then the 8x42, and finally these 8x34 binoculars were notably less bright. To give you an idea of the difference, just after sunset, I could still "see" a tree out in my garden with all three instruments, but it all depends on how much detail you want or need to observe. So with the 8x56, you can still distinguish details like markings on the trunk, these are less obvious with the 8x42 and with the 8x42 it is pretty much in silhouette. These Bresser binoculars offer 15mm of eye-relief, which like the close focus is good, but not excellent.

If you take a moment to consider that my alpha is far more expensive and uses the very best optics including dielectrically coated prisms, this small difference is perfectly acceptable and indeed it is quite impressive that it is so minor. Having said that, 15mm is more than enough for most users and usually enough for those who wear glasses to be able to twist down the cups and still get the full field of view.Bresser does not mention the exact makeup of the elements within their objective lenses, so I cannot comment here. I would describe the overall image definition as good when compared to an alpha level instrument and very good when compared to instruments in their class. Bresser Pirsch ED 8x42 binoculars have a Metal and Polycarbonate chassis that is lightweight yet robust and come with an all-metal focus wheel with a smooth mechanism for fast accurate focal adjustments. Metal eye-piece housings and eyecups that are tough with an excellent twist up/down mechanism and more than 17mm of eye-relief. The airtight interior is also filled with a completely moistureless Nitrogen gas which prevents the internal optical surfaces from fogging up under certain circumstances. In poor light, I must say that the difference between light and dark areas on my alpha was more obvious, which is certainly down to them producing a brighter looking view.
