Description

The National Geographic Astro Planetarium is an affordable and high-quality indoor planetarium that accurately depicts the night sky, offering excellent value. It comes with two projection discs – one displaying 8,000 stars and the other featuring guidelines for major constellations. Crucially, what you see is true to the time and day you set, as we confirmed during our National Geographic Astro Planetarium review. We've chosen to put this projector at the top of this list as it offers the same (or even better) functionality than the Sega Toys Homestar Flux but at a much lower cost. AD – the item in this review was gifted to our household for this post. All opinions, as always, are our own. When we managed to get our hands on this little guy for our Astronaut Starry Sky Star Projector Review, we didn't have high expectations for this seemingly novelty item with a price that we've seen vary significantly between online and in-store retailers.

Spinning the projector on its axis, we found the slide viewer and tactile focus wheel. As with an old-fashioned overhead projector, the projector can be focused onto near or far surfaces to increase or decrease the size of the images. Image quality is maintained with minor focus adjustments, which our children managed to do intuitively and with ease. It comes with four different disks, all in their own cases, which can be switched in and out of the Night Sky toy, depending on what you want to see. One is the moon, another the solar system, two of the disks showcase the night sky, but one has all of the various constellations mapped out, so you can learn how to see them in your own sky too! Create A Night Sky Projection Kit:If you've got time with the kids to fill, this could be a fun introduction to stargazing. Don't expect to be dazzled by a plug-and-play awe-inspiring experience, but you can enjoy the process of setting it up with your kids.★★★ To get a bright and sharp projection on your ceiling, just rotate the image and adjust the focus wheel (which is easy to do in the dark thanks to the blue illuminated buttons). The optics are from the German optics brand Bresser, who make binoculars, telescopes, and microscopes. However, we did notice that the stars at the edge of the projection can seem blurry. One novel feature is an optional 'falling star' mode, which projects a flashing meteor every 40 seconds, though the falling star is always in the same place. Not all star projectors are scientifically accurate — some are designed to be pleasant ambient lights to be used as kids' night lights or just to create a relaxing atmosphere. However, some models are scientifically accurate and create a planetarium in the comfort of your own home — these include the the Sega Toys Homestar Flux, National Geographic Astro Planetarium and Bresser Junior Astro-Planetarium Deluxe. What is the difference between a star projector and a planetarium? Like the Atmosphere Smart Galaxy Projector, you won't get scientific accuracy, but you'll get a fantastic 'insomnia-busting' experience that allows your children (or yourself) to sleep better at night. When it comes to toys to do with space, we have quite a few. Kai went through a massive space phase, getting loads of scientific books, toys, telescopes and so much more, but we never got our hands on a projector. Brainstorm Toys Night Sky projector is a child friendly projector that is very durable and easy for kids to carry around and uses. The girls were super interested in the toy, with Kai using it to point out various constellations. In comparison to the Atmosphere Smart Galaxy Projector, the Ambience Galaxy & Star Projector has fewer lighting modes available, but it doesn't suffer from it. It offers four colors: blue, green, white and red, and users can blend these colors together using the supplied remote control and adjust the brightness to their specific preference. This particular projector is aimed at children, and the stars it projects aren't scientific like you'd find on the more 'adult' Sega Homestar Flux. But it still features a slide projector and three easy-to-handle discs containing 24 color images taken by the Hubble Telescope. Each disc has a different theme; Nebulas, Spacecraft & Astronauts and Planets & the Moon.

Realistic Planetarium Projector】 Our Planetarium Star Projector boasts 12 planet discs featuring planets and natural illumination. This galaxy projector bathes your walls and ceilings with stars and nebulae, providing an immersive experience that transports you to the heart of a galaxy. National Geographic Astro Planetarium would make a nice space gift for a budding astronomer. It has great functionality, with a time and date selector and a built-in speaker.★★★★½ The disks are 'chunky' so easy to hold, and robust so they won't break if dropped by a playful child (Image credit: Lorna Jordan) For less of a scientific learning tool and a more impressive light display, with a quieter motor, the BlissLights Sky Lite 2.0 is worth your attention. It is not scientific at all, but it is a fun way to see lights and patterns that are loosely comparable to deep-space imagery. It is also often reduced to the same price as the Brainstorm Planetarium and Projector reviewed here, so there usually isn't much between the two financially.

The Pococo Galaxy Star Projector is a worthy addition to this guide, and it is a good rival to the National Geographic Astro Planetarium and the much more expensive Sega Homestar Flux. During our full Pococo Galaxy star projector review, we found it a good value star projector with decent build and projection quality.
