I was reading the book as part of a readalong with other bloggers organised by the Tandem Collective but found myself racing ahead as I was overtaken by a desperate need for answers. When Jude’s first love Liam turns up in her life after ten years of no contact, asking her for a favour, she just can’t say no.

I have to agree with other reviewers that this was nowhere near as good as most of Nicci French's novels. Then, out of the blue, after an absence of eleven years, her first serious boyfriend, Liam Birch turns up to meet her with a strange request. But Liam has a favour to ask, nothing big, no worries if you can’t, tell you what it is when we meet in Norfolk. We get some insight into how smitten she was 11 years earlier but even she admits he was kinda dangerous and unpredictable.Little does Jude know that this may well change her life beyond recognition and drag her into a world that she would be better off leaving alone. One of contemporary British fiction’s most famous double-acts, Nicci French is the pseudonym of husband and wife writing team Nicci Gerard and Sean French. Some may say this book airs on the lighter side when it comes to the Mystery/Thriller genre and perhaps they’re right it didn’t have me hiding under my bed, but this book has the suspense and at times eerie factor on high.

It’s over eleven years since Jude Winter has seen Liam Birch, but what they shared when they were eighteen has never left her. I could understand Jude’s frustration at no one believing the truth… that they had no current relationship, but needless to say her world falls apart. I still liked her but groaned each time she entrenched herself more deeply into the world her former high school boyfriend and his very unorthodox group of friends lived.

Nicci French is the pseudonym for the writing partnership of journalists Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. Their first novel as Nicci French was The Memory Game, since then they have collaborated on many standalone psychological thrillers, including Killing Me Softly, The Red Room, Secret Smile and Catch Me When I Fall. Written during lockdown, this reflects a strange time when stability was fractured and we weren't quite sure how to navigate the present - and that sense of being unmoored creeps through this book to give it an uneasy edge: 3. I couldn’t put the book down and loved the surprising twists and uncertainty that lingers throughout the book.

But after she does the favour, she is contacted by the police, informing her that Liam has been found dead, and suddenly she is caught up in a murder investigation.THE GRIPPING NEW THRILLER FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR NICCI FRENCH, shortlisted for the 2023 Ned Kelly Awards for Best International Crime Fiction ‘Excels at depicting an ordinary life swept away by horror' Observer ‘Fantastic – a breathless drumbeat of dread and suspense’ Lee Child‘Heart-thumping, head-scratching, nail-biting stuff: The Favour is classic Nicci French. The Memory Game was published to great acclaim in 1997 followed by The Safe House (1998), Killing Me Softly (1999), Beneath the Skin (2000), The Red Room (2001), Land of the Living (2002), Secret Smile (2003), Catch Me When I Fall (2005), Losing You (2006) and Until It's Over (2008). Then, one day her first love, Liam, turns up at her work out of the blue saying he wants her to do him a favour, though he’s vague about what this favour is. However, when Liam doesn’t arrive on the train as promised, Jude finds her whole life thrown into utter turmoil and she is in danger of becoming another casualty of others’ sinister plans.

None of the characters were likeable, and yet characterisations were spot on, one of the hallmarks the author team is known for and what keeps me coming back for more every time. Then we're introduced to Liam's housemates, an eccentric cast of characters, and Jude is mesmerized by these lunatics. He wants her to drive up to a remote cottage on the Norfolk coast, using his car and paying with his credit card, and then wait for him to arrive by train the following evening. It might have been more bearable with a different narrator, but this one read the whole thing as if she was auditioning for a melodrama.

Op een goede manier) Met De gunst heeft Nicci French een boek geschreven met veel en heel bijzondere personages in een bijzondere setting.
