Feldman attempts to tell the tale of his hungry years as a trumpet-playing vagabond until his rise to international celebrity, predicated on his googly eyes (the result of suspect thyroid medication), wiry stature, and an irrepressible bent for the bizarre.

I guess some people might find reading about Marty's life interesting, but this disjointed autobiography just didn't do it for me. The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine (1971–72) was a television series co-produced by Associated Television (ATV) in the UK and the American Broadcasting Company, produced at ATV's Elstree Studios, near London. Marty Feldman è un attore che chiunque appartenga alla mia generazione avrà visto almeno una volta, tipicamente in quel capolavoro comico che è Frankenstein Jr. In a 1979 interview, when asked how long he had practised this, he stated: "I was about five and a half or six when I converted; I'm forty-three now, so it's been approximately thirty-eight years.Feldman created a number of immensely successful and influential shows, and was one of the most essential creative forces in British comedy embodied also by his close friends and creative partners from Beyond the Fringe (especially Peter Cook and Dudley Moore) and Monty Python (especially John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle). And perhaps another biographer could have latched on to a detail like that and written a much better work – by acknowledging the brilliant moments and the great work, but zeroing in on how it all went wrong. He was an architect of British comedy, paving the way for Monty Python, and then became a major Hollywood star, forever remembered as Igor in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein.

Despite being a fascinating read, the book would have benefited from some editorial intervention and retrospective objectivity. His dream of "making films with big-time people" had come true and he initially achieved the global success he so desired, although subsequent movie projects proved to be less successful and Feldman struggled with the Hollywood lifestyle.

He did not know that he would die there, although he certainly felt he might die soon, and was haunted by the notion. Last Remake of Beau Geste would be considered one of the funniest films of all time if anyone either A) Read the book, or more importantly B) Realized you didn’t have to. It all caught up to him at age 48 when he died of a massive heart attack while filming the movie Yellowbeard.

The autobiography is perhaps better appreciated if read in conjunction with Robert Ross's fine biography of the performer. How odd to publish an autobiography — and it is an autobiography, not a ghosted effort — 33 years after your death. Equally, it was interesting to plot his journey to Hollywood, and unfortunately his fall from grace. Towards the end of his life, Feldman was involved in a screenplay about Buster Keaton’s desperate later years writing gags at MGM. The Chalke History Festival announces a new name, new look, and tons for history buffs to get their teeth into! This is not a great book, nor a funny book, but it was honest and from the heart about an often overlooked genius. More so than other books of UK comedians of the time, Marty's book makes it clear that UK comedy was a boys club. All the writings were discovered in the attic long after he passed away at far too young an age - possibly due to the abysmal traffic in Mexico. Anyone more familiar with British television of the 50's and 60's would not skim, but for me there were too many names dropped that meant nothing, and too much focus on contract negotiations and other aspects of the business side of Marty's world at that point.
