The story gradually grows grander and bigger until it’s nonstop action—confronting monsters, figuring out who’s a traitor, and all that good stuff—like an avalanche. Praise for ANGEL MAGE: "A unique magical system based on angel summoning and icons, deft characterization--including male and female protagonists and LGBTQ representation--and an affectionate rendering of Dumas's style will delight teen and adult fans of swashbuckling romance. But was it pleasantly entertaining and perfectly fine for a few nights after a long day of work, like a nice cup of cocoa?

Unfortunately, there are other forces out to find Susan, and so to the rescue come the mysterious and sexy Merlin, his badass sister Vivian, and the rest of their strange, wonderful clan of warrior booksellers! Is it purely to pander to the American audience, or does the Australian author prefer this to using English? I read ‘The Left-Handed Booksellers of London’ in advance of the publication of its sequel later this month.

I enjoyed this very much finding myself caught up in the story of Susan Arkshaw and her quest to locate her father in a slightly alternative 1983 London. The Grandmother raised the flower and sniffed it again, her piercing dark eyes momentarily hooded, a smile passing across her thin-boned face like a glimpse of some small, colorful bird darting between dark and brooding trees. Overall, this is a captivating and memorable tale that will please longstanding Nix fans and other lovers of intelligently written fantasy. I do not recommend reading this one and I’m tempted to not read anymore of Garth Nix’s books because I’m terrified that’s what they will all be like.

When she visits her "uncle", he turns to dust and mystical creatures come after her and the assassin, Merlin. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan’s.This is the first Garth Nix novel I have read – well, listened to as I had borrowed the audiobook via BorrowBox from my local library. There are no tortured pasts or (reformed) bad boy love interests or mean girls despising the heroine who’s not like the other girls.

He’s also somewhat gender-fluid (apparently booksellers have the ability to shift sexes if they choose) and enjoys wearing the occasional dress, though after establishing this early on, Nix doesn’t follow through on this point and pretty much completely drops it, leaving me muttering about Chekhov’s gun. The characters and their sparkling dialogue are the high points in this fantasy tale for young adults. It has heroic booksellers who are the only ones who live in the modern world (1983) but can see and fight the paranormal beings of old. Most seem to tread along the same lines: Great Mysterious Evil is about to arise, a teen (or group of teens) race to stop it. I found the Left Handed Booksellers to be a good story which moved quickly and kept my interest throughout.
