I found myself skimming through the sections that involved detailed discussions of tracking the money. No moment when DMS felt something out there in the void, talking to it, when DMS knew it was not alone. In her by-now-characteristic fashion, Penny simultaneously unspools several suspense narratives, each of them accruing power and threat, faster and faster, until the novel closes in a crescendo of violence, unmasking and regret. Spoiler alert: Because this is a review of a book in a series, some details in this review may be “spoilers” if you have not read previous numbers in the series. The only difference I felt about this book is that it’s less about the mystery—which is fine but not riveting, and more about the sea change happening within the main characters’ lives.

Last Thursday one of the things I gave thanks for was the opportunity to head back to Three Pines and visit all its wonderful inhabitants in Louise Penny’s latest novel, Kingdom of the Blind. This imposing figure was created as part of an installation that presented the possessions of an imaginary ruler.

Eventually, all four of the systems had been wiped and re-established from two-year-old back-ups and in three cases, the problems had stopped. When Armand Gamache receives a letter inviting him to an abandoned farmhouse outside of Three Pines, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him as an executor of her will. Al is hired by an acquaintance who happens to be the local mob boss to track down his own brother who's wanted by the mafia for the murder of an important gangster figure. Gamache confesses to Reine-Marie that he was supposed to go to Montreal yesterday to see the internal affairs committee, and that he’s relieved that the blizzard was big enough that it prevented them from meeting.

They found out it was happening again when the power outage rolled through headquarters early in the sequence.
