Besides the historical perspective of how menstruating women have been treated throughout known history, it goes into the social aspects of period poverty (people who unable to afford menstruation products because they're homeless or living at or below the poverty line) and period and reproductive health issues like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and endometriosis) in accessible language for younger readers. Schneemann and Williams break barriers with this fictional friendship story centered on the subject of menstruation. Christine starts a blog (The Mean Magenta) and slowly makes connections with like voices in the online community. Go with the Flow by Karen Schneemann is a graphic novel (like a comic book) fior kids about periods. The story is well paced, with enough character development to make you feel a warm kinship with the girls and enough information to spur you to action to fight against the unjustifiable stigma that accompanies periods.

She grew up in Northern California where she received her BFA from California College of the Arts before moving to Denver, Colorado. It’s the fact that the kids are challenging authority of adults inspired by bodily autonomy with an emphasis on educating girls. The support the girls show their diverse friend group is powerful, and a great example of female friendship at an especially vulnerable age.

When the principal says to her, “It’s not like the boys get free jock itch cream,” it can be mighty hard not to start screaming at the page. It'll get kids thinking, and hopefully talking, about topics they may have otherwise thought of as something to keep private. I cannot imagine how painful the sanitary belt with metal clips was for my mom, and it made me grateful for technological advances.

Lily Williams and Karen Scheeman have created a candid and down-to-earth graphic novel that perfectly captures the teen experience; the conversations between these friends are refreshing in their directness, as the girls refuse to feel shame over their own bodily functions, even when everyone around them wants to. I also really enjoyed all the factual details sprinkled throughout the blog and the notes afterwards. The book is entertaining, frequently funny, and expertly illustrated; the reader learns so much about the girls' personalities just from their expressive faces! There's so much to love about the honest, loving friendships in this graphic novel, and the realistic, vulnerable ways conversations about menstruation fit into their lives.
