In addition to his short stories, Chandler published just seven full novels during his lifetime (though an eighth in progress at his death was completed by Robert B. And when the huge convict, one Moose Malloy picks him and tosses him aside, easy as a lion swats aside a ball of yarn, well. We have two candidates for the femme-fatale here, and you are kept wondering to the last page if there are one or two bad girls.

He’s also, seen more clearly by today’s standards, not admirable; he’s homophobic, at times seemingly racist, certainly arrogant with some women if not misogynist, with addictions to booze and cigarettes. It was during the Depression era that he seriously turned his hand to writing, and his first published story appeared in the pulp magazine Black Mask in 1933, followed six years later, when he was fifty, by his first novel, The Big Sleep . But down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid.

Chandler attempts to confuse the situation, and generally succeeds, but not in a particularly clever way.

Marlowe is working a boring job trying to find a missing husband when he has the bad luck to come across Moose Malloy. It is always good to follow these stories of the hard drinking detective and this is a fairly good story. If you like to take an enlightened look back at the fragility of fame, in the early days of Hollywood, at the procession line of starlets chewed up and spat out, the casting couches and the extremely questionable tactics of producers and directors, in the jaded lights of 1930s LA, then you can do no ill by reading this. Try the Girl" provided the initial story about a hoodlum looking for his old girlfriend who has moved on to a more respectable life.Apart from this sentimental love-and-hate story,I’m ALWAYS impressed by the characters speaking like they carry a book of wit and humor,to the point that I’ll start picking up sharp-edged setences from here and add them to my daily conversation. It's impossible to think of anything that might be remotely fresh and interesting to say about this book.

Audience Question: [ interrupting what would surely have been an insightful elaboration on the topic of substance v. The story has all the elements Chandler is best known for biting humor, colorful characters that include gangsters and lawmen with violent streaks and hair-trigger temperaments, a keen insight into the sordid lives of society’s rich and powerful, and a private detective with a taste for alcohol and the soul of an avenging angel. Mrs Grayle convinced Marriott to set up Marlowe to be killed in the canyon, but actually did so to kill Marriott because she viewed him as a 'weak link' who would reveal her secret past. Anne Riordan, a 'nice' girl-next-door, gets to do some flirty bickering with Marlowe but does he think he's too much in the gutter for her fragrant self?If you can get past the casual racism that litters the early chapters, you’ll find one of the classics of noir fiction. Randall, the cunning but honest Los Angeles cop investigating Marriott's murder, is skeptical about the story. He put his lifted foot down slowly and turned slowly and stared at us, spreading his feet gently and moving a broad tongue along his lips.
