This release has the matted widescreen version only, which does suffer from the contrast problem as detailed above, but plays as the original version without any editing tweaks. This limited edition DVD is packaged is a foam-latex reproduction of the Necronomicon as it appears in The Evil Dead. The superior quality copy of the short film Within The Woods is a big upgrade to the standard internet VCD version. But then things get weird, with a collection of extras hosted by a rather irritating lady who sits in a tree [pictured above], with titles like Bruce Campbell: Geek or God?

This would probably have been done for technical reasons, such as source print damage, or on-set equipment which would have been visible otherwise. And the blu was so cheap, too; it was like a budget release except really a top shelf, first class special edition. Their business model was easily better and more entrepreneurial than the grasping film-funding structure of the UK, and industry figures here could do with taking a look at what Raimi did rather than bemoan the lack of public funding available.Starring Bruce Campbell (TV’s Ash vs Evil Dead) and Ellen Sandweiss (TV’s Ash vs Evil Dead), The Evil Dead follows five college students who travel to a remote cabin in the woods and unwittingly unleash a monstrous evil hellbent on their total destruction. From rave reviews and standing ovations in New York, Montreal and now Toronto, join us for Evil Dead, The Musical. Both the widescreen versions, and the full screen version on the Ultimate Edition are virtually identical, and the untampered versions. It's really awesome how good the final blu-rays came out for both these films, and with surprising terrific new extras for both. But when they uncover some artefacts and a tape recording of the archaeologist who last stayed there, they resurrect the unseen evil which causes each of them, one by one, to become evil demons and murder the others.

Since I can’t count how many times I’ve watched this movie and shown it to countless others, watching it today is enjoyable, but not as much as it was in the past.Again, the blu is the same 2010 blu Anchor Bay released, so it has no extras but the newer commentary. I don’t own the original 1999 Anchor Bay full-frame DVD so I can’t compare it to that; but if disc 2 is any representation of that (and given Anchor Bay’s track record for re-releasing films consistently without updating image quality, it probably is), I’d have to say that the full-frame version looks quite similar to the 1. Additionally there is also quite a difference in picture framing between this, and all the other versions. It’s interesting to see the personalities of the actresses, especially Ellen Sandweiss who comes across as a bit bitter towards life in general.
