This three-in-one volume features Edgar Award-winning author Burl Barer's works: MAN OVERBOARD, BETRAYAL IN BLUE, and A TASTE FOR MURDER. The audio version was let down by the over-dubbing with either correction or additional info on various sections of the book.

The author's stated purpose is to "demystify, as far as possible, those predators in human form who have been with us since the dawn of history. The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is the most comprehensive set of its kind in the history of true crime publishing.

Als jemand der mit Serien wie Medical Detectives groß geworden ist und beim Autofahren oder vor dem Schlafen gehen True-Crime Podcasts hört war ich sehr gespannt was diese Enzyklopädie bereit hält. Due to the ever evolving information of the subject matter it is a bit redundant to have a book on serial killers. Through hundreds of detailed entries that span the entire spectrum -- the shocking crimes, the infamous perpetrators, and much more -- they examine all angles of a gruesome cultural phenomenon that grips our imagination. While the entries to these volumes will continue to grow - the FBI estimates that there are at least 50 serial killers operating in the United States at any given time - The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is as complete as possible through the end of 2017. Also, I felt this author was a little egotistical in places, thinking he was right and no-one else is which was a little annoying, and unwarranted.More than 240 entries and 70 photographs detail individual cases of serial murder from ancient Rome to the present day, law enforcement agents and their techniques, the factors that contribute to the development of a serial killer, and how society chooses to deal with and punish these vicious criminals. Michael Newton's The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers might not have come into being this way, but then again, it might have. Overall, a good "starters guide" to those interested in true crime and the phenomenon of serial killings. You will find these killers and approximately 475 others in this third book in the series of The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers. The entries include the Terminator Anatoly Yuriyovych Onoprienko, Trailside Killer David Joseph Carpenter, Joseph Vacher, Vampire of Sacramento Richard Trenton Chase and the Voroshilovgrad Maniac Zaven Sarkisovich Almazyan, plus the Unsolved Serial Killer Cases of the Adelaide Child Murders, Axeman of New Orleans, Chillicothe Killer, Dead Women of Juarez, Korea Frog Boy Murders and Volga Maniac.

The book is quite detailed, and I liked the fact that there was information in the book on serial killers from the 1800's and earlier (Erzsebet Bathory born in 1560). Written and compiled by Susan Hall, the four-volume set has more than 1600 entries of male and female serial killers from around the world. New major serial killers have come to light since the first edition was published, and many older cases have been solved (such as the Green River Killer) or further investigated (like Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer).Perhaps the most interesting thing about this murder-opedia is that it feels like it has a British focus, so there is more detail on European and English murderers, like Fred West, who was apprehended and charged in 1994, apparently when this text was authored. He is also the author of Nevermore and The Hum Bug, the acclaimed historical novels featuring Edgar Allan Poe.
