It instantly captures your attention, but that’s what Cressida Cowell’s writing and imagination does and this book doesn’t disappoint. Put aside the nostalgia for her writing, illustrations, humour, and storytelling, I fell in love it all again. There's a lot of emotional depth in there, and I'm sure there'll be many children out there like Izzy, planning on getting rid of a stepfather and stepbrother, or like Mable, who secretly like their new family but have to hide it from an older brother who doesn't, or like Annipeck who is part of both sides of this new family. A witty, rip-roaring battle of good and evil, secrets and lies, monsters and magic ensues, illustrated with Cowell's signature black and white sketches, and underpinned by an ecological message.

But that becomes a bit tricky to do when there are animated toothbrushes, flying Hoovers and, most noticeable of all all, A GIANT ROBOT ASSASSIN! It is also full of humorous situations that brings extra entertainment in its twisty, action-packed fantasy/sci-fi world. It’s great to find a fantastical realm where plastic, rather than gold or silver, is an important material. With a terrible beast and a petrifying robot assassin in their way, they must learn to work together quickly - because the future of their family is at stake. This is done sparingly, and doesn’t intrude on the narrative too much, and it will be interesting to see what bearing will have on other books in the series.

K2 O'Hero is a seemingly ordinary boy - after all, he and his twin sister Izzabird have been sworn to keep their family's magical history a secret. I think it's also worth checking out the print version as well, given the illustrations interspersed throughout the story. When 11-year-old K2 O’Hero discovers he has a Magical gift allowing him and his siblings to travel to alternative worlds (yes, there really are alternative worlds out there), some very weird things start happening. The characters are all quirky in their own way, my favourite being K2 who has always been overshadowed by his loud, feisty twin sister Izzabird. Amongst all of the arguments and chaos there was a surprise misty eyed moment that had me trying to figure out how to get myself grafted into the O’Hero-Smith family.

Theo and Mabel Smith (their stepsiblings) do not like the O'Heros and are highly suspicious of them and try to make their lives a misery.I felt like there were too many characters, magical objects and otherworldly beings to get to know the main characters. Cressida Cowell really is the queen of world building, and with this marvellous book kicking off her newest series, she has done it again! Which Way to Anywhere is an inventive midgrade portal fantasy featuring maps, robots and latent superpowers.

The book is stuffed with eccentric characters, some of whom pass through briefly, but may have a larger role to play in the future. It's clear after reading Cressida Cowell's latest book, Which Way to Anywhere, that the limits of her imagination know no bounds. Cressida Cowell is the number one bestselling author-illustrator of the How to Train Your Dragon and The Wizards of Once book series. Only one of them will inherit the family fortune and so a race is afoot to save the dwindling Petty-Squabble empire and win the love of their parents.A fantastical story of adventures through alternative worlds and brimming with characters to cheer on - and some to boo! There is magic; the O’Heros have magical powers, as do some other characters, but there are also robots and explanations of wormholes and other dimensions, and some characters are a mixture of both.
