Maria's sudden reappearance threatens it all, and forces Louise to reconnect with everyone she'd severed ties with to escape the past. Yet all the time, in the back of my mind, this one unforgivable act has loomed - squashed, squeezed, parcelled, but always there". Something that happened in high school is coming to a head 27 years later when something happens at a class reunion. Unfortunately for me as got past the halfway mark I got very irritated with the main character’s emotions, and the way she was behaving, making some of the plot rather far-fetched. As for the ending to this one, I thought the author did a great job keeping it a believable outcome overall while adding in a few extra little twists to the story.

Thank you to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing and Laura Marshall for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. The friend request kicks off a chain of events for Louise, bringing back her pain and fear from those years, long ago. Yet, there are other prevalent themes running throughout, with the spotlight shining on the mistreatment of classmates, the intense desire to belong and be accepted, especially as teenagers. The other woman barely features in the book, but I don't have much compassion for someone who has an affair with a married man, knowing there is a very young child involved.I’m not saying it’s anything super special, it’s reasonably simple and there aren’t a lot of beautiful descriptions of things, but it’s easy to read and definitely keeps you reading. I fervently hope four year old Henry will not be warped from his mother’s incessant inhalations of him, burying her nose in his neck, reveling in the smell of his hair, his head, breathing in his very essence, etc. Single mum Louise has spent her entire adult life trying to forget Maria’s death, which changed her forever. My only problem was the first half alternates between the past and the present almost chapter to chapter.

Louise knows that if the truth ever sees the light of day, her life, as she knows its, will be over. I didn't trust anyone, and all of the characters seemed shady, the only one who was obviously innocent was L.As Louise tries to find out who’s behind the request and the chilling messages that follow, she’s drawn back to her circle of old school friends; and when a tragic event drags the past into the present, she is forced to figure out who she can trust and to face the guilty memories she thought she’d left behind.
