When his son Kenta discovered Koushun Takami’s controversial Battle Royale in 1999—which was nearly banned by the Japanese government upon its release—Fukasaku read the novel and became engrossed by its story, which brought back his memories of the war. All told, Arrow Video’s new Battle Royale: Limited Edition is a spectacular box set for fans of this film. I noticed that some of the killings have had blood-spatter digitally added - it's incredibly obvious but since most of the deaths were nowhere near as messy as they should have been it sort of helps. Including one card for the rules of the game, there are 42 cards featuring the characters, and their vital statistics.

There’s not a lot between the two versions, and I feel like the Special Edition was a smidge softer. This is essentially a reference-grade image, not a perfect presentation but as close to one as is possible for this film. Two of the sleeves contain all the printed extras, and have the special edition posters on their fronts. The DVD only covered the theatrical version of the film, so I’ve never seen the director’s cut nor its sequel.

As a teenage boy in 1945, he was drafted by the Japanese military along with his classmates and made to work in a weapons plant. The kids of Third Year Class-B Shiroiwa Junior High School are back, in a brand new UHD restoration of the classic cult shocker adapted from the controversial novel by Koushun Takami. It is better than the DVD release, although the aspect ratio does suggest that there has been some degree of cropping (or open matte).

There was no way I was NOT going to like a Blu-Ray version of this masterpiece, but even so Arrow Videos have absolutely wowed me with their considered and generous treatment of the release.I try not to watch the same film twice in the same year, and put the new set at the bottom of the to-watch pile. If they try to fight back against those behind things, or if they enter any forbidden area the collars will detonate, killing them. stereo audio - Optional English subtitles - Original soundtrack CD for Battle Royale [Limited Edition Exclusive] - Kinji Fukasaku: Man of Rage, an exclusive 120-page monograph on the director by Japanese cinema expert Tom Mes [Limited Edition Exclusive] - Illustrated collectors booklet featuring new essays by Matt Alt and Anne Billson and archival articles - Exclusive Battle Royale collectors Trump Card set [Limited Edition Exclusive] - Reversible poster with new artwork [Limited Edition Exclusive] DISC ONE BATTLE ROYALE: ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION (4K UHD BLU-RAY) - Brand new audio commentary by critics Tom Mes and Jasper Sharp - Battle Royale at 20: Back to School, an exclusive new 42-minute documentary about the legacy of Battle Royale - And much more! Now that legacy lives on with the movie receiving its very own UHD restoration in a new 4K Ultra HD limited edition box set. Granted Japan loves to take risks, especially when it comes to violence, sex and more like Takashi Miike‘s catalogue that ranges from family friendly films all the way to violent works that ended with some cuts or bans in some regions.

This time last year, I had finally got around to reviewing the 2010 Limited Edition Blu-ray release of Battle Royale, which was when Arrow Video went and announced a brand new Limited Edition of Battle Royale, on UHD and on Blu-ray.Watching it again now, and having lost that rebellious adolescent fascination I once held for the first film, I can only see Battle Royale II: Requiem as simply a bad film. I must have been in a good mood the first time I reviewed Battle Royale II: Requiem, either that, or coming off the back of the first film, I was looking for anything that could match its controversial impact. DISC TWO BATTLE ROYALE: SPECIAL EDITION DIRECTORS CUT (4K UHD BLU-RAY) - Shooting the Special Edition, on-location featurette with footage of the cast and crew reuniting for the shoot of the Special Edition - And much more! These are particularly interesting for the way that Kenta offers insights on his father’s personal history, his reaction to the original novel, and his thoughts on the overall subject of violence.
