Following the success of her breakout poem, “B”, Sarah Kay releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. After a long awaited compilation of 10 years, Sarah Kay finally publishes her collection of poems which can only be described as brutally raw, naked, and hopeful. Both fresh and wise, Kay's poetry allows readers to join in on her journey of discovering herself and the world around her.

Plus, for the first time in what seems like forever, Sarah Kay's words have inspired me to start writing again. Most of us have had the experience of being forced to read poetry in school, laboring to find the "hidden meaning" that may or may not have been placed there intentionally. Sarah Kay is primarily a spoken word poet, so the writing style embraces the sound and rhythm of her poetry, not simply the structural aspects. Sarah Kay is definitely an astonishing poet and because she is under-appreciated in the book world, I feel that more should look into giving this book a read. She performs with confidence and charisma, which adds that extra bit of voice I found lacking in No Matter the Wreckage. I thought on paper her poems might seem flat and lack that excitement and passion she had conveyed with ease on screen. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join her on the journey of discovering herself and the world around her.

I felt very detached from the author and the themes while reading the poems, and I felt that the free-form didn't help convey the message she was trying to get accross. I appreciate Sarah's collection because I definitely got to experience poetry in a different perspective. On the other hand, the chance to see the poems on paper provided an opportunity to dig into them in a way that listening does not quite offer and even on the poems I had listened to, I noticed components I had not before. Well, it is an outstanding collection of poems which I do not want to give away too much of, but this collection will only make you wish there was a volume 2.I guess right now the poem I am thinking about the most is the poem Ghost Ship, a line from which inspired the title for this collection. The poetry books I have read so far are either lackluster or bland in terms of writing, but this book completely changed my viewpoint on poetry. There are poems about so many different subjects here all carefully constructed and eloquently written. Poetry is a very subjective thing, and for me to appreciate it I have to connect with what it's saying.
