The chess game goes like this; 3 chess boards against the demon himself while your teammate battles two minor demons in a death match. He sneaks out of his aunt's house, goes home and finds his parents and sister dead, horribly and gruesomely murdered. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, particularly if the others are as brilliant as this! I t turns out that he does, to a certain extent, feel pity towards the humans he torments despite them providing him with delicious food. He has little choice, considering what shocking events take over his everyday life but he manages to deal with these horrors and even fight back.

When he and his cousin/best friend Bill-E Spleen (I still remember that name :D) investigate they stumble onto a truth they never could have expected. He moved to Limerick in Ireland with his parents and younger brother when he was six, and has lived there ever since.Lord Loss also has an obsession with chess, something that Grubbs Grady considers stupid and pointless. Grubbs narrowly escapes death, but suffers from PTSD and is hospitalised due to his poor mental state. The Ka-Gash then wipes out all the demon masters but upon arriving at Lord Loss, they learn of the deal struck with Bec, that is to spare his life if he agrees to help her concuct her plan. While there’s no real depth to the characters or world building and the plot occasionally feels overstretched and bloated (especially towards the end of the series) when Shan tries to take on too much this was still an enjoyable read with some cool suspense (especially at the start), a mostly sharp, well-written plot and great, highly engaging action scenes throughout. This gives the book an amateurish feel, not found in the books of other authors writing fantasy for teenagers (eg.

I’m now listening the The Saga books on audible and love them so much I thought I’d try Lord Loss again and so glad I did. From here, life is never the same but Grubbs finds that there is magic that can fight and defeat the demons, if not Lord Loss himself. If his behavior is only a trick to make the reader be surprised that they will learn to like Grubs, it's kind of a cheap one. For example, at the end of his chess game in the first book, he graciously escorts Dervish Grady to the portal to the Demonata Universe, and then tries to rip his throat out moments later.Having read The Saga years ago and loved the series I tried Lord Loss but couldn’t go beyond the first few chapters. Lord Loss is an ancient demon who feeds off the sorrow of humanity, and because of this, he has a morbid love of the human race.
