Description

The Holocaust as everybody knows was inhumane and pure evil but I still find that some things shock me to my core, to believe that any one human could do that to another human is a bitter pill to swallow and so unimaginable that it hurts to think about. They were a very close knit, but liberal and tolerant family, and their upbringing was idyllic, despite the occasional spectre of long term historical anti-semitism in Hungary. Sľúbila si, že ak prežije, porozpráva svoj príbeh z Osvienčimu, aby sa už niečo podobné nikdy nezopakovalo. She is an inspiration and what was done to her and her family is a warning that we must never turn our backs on evil. She found it easier to talk when she had grandchildren; and in addition society became more interested in hearing from Holocaust survivors in the years after the Eichmann trial in 1961 had allowed survivors for the first time to recount their experiences to a public willing more now to listen than they had been in the immediate post-war years.

Lily Ebert has spent a lot of her later years speaking in schools to tell her story, and this book is suitable for older children and young adults. Lily, having gone through so much, radiates strength and wisdom and both she and Dov warmed my heart. Especially reading that a lot of the time, a lot of the people enslaved became jealous of those who had died. When we hear, view or read about the Holocaust, we rarely read what happened after the victims were rescued. That word doesn’t seem at all big enough to contain the intolerance, hate, violence, and despair these people of all ages suffered for so many years. As the allies advanced into German territory in early 1945, Lily and her group were sent on one of the notorious death marches across the territory ahead of the advancing liberators, before they were eventually saved by stumbling across some American soldiers. Lily toho stratila veľa, ale vybudovala si nový život pre seba a svoju rodinu najprv v Izraeli a potom v Londýne.

Later on Shmuel suffered poor health and needed a cooler climate so the family moved to Britain and settled in north London, leaving Rene and Piri back in Israel. I had a Jewish friend tell me that she has a hard time talking about the Holocaust with her children. I feel like I’ve learned A LOT while reading it and I plan to continue learning and telling people about it.As more time passes and more survivors die, the horrors of Auschwitz seem to fade into the problems of today's history.
