Description

We see the evils of fanaticism through the warrior lodge, but the inspiring hope of faith that Keeler and Sindermann bring to the people on the Vengeful Spirit. Euraphti Keeler, the living saint, Kyril Sinnderman and Mersadie Oilton pay witness to Astrates war first hand.

Leading the surviving loyalists he pulled out of the fight, Tarvitz takes advantage of Eidolon's undisciplined attack and manages to repel the assault. Honour and pride had filled Artuas' heart the day he had been selected from the mass of noviates stationed in the training camps on Terra, to be elevated to full Astartes. Ben was stuck with a story to tell where there is one piece left of the puzzle - that is a lot of death. It means that it is a struggle to immerse yourself with each of the characters, but that pages just flit past without you realising.Lucius leads the Emperor's Children half of the attack on the Precentor's Palace while the World Eaters under Captain Ehrlen become bogged down massacring fanatical citizens in a plaza to the north and the Death Guard advance through the city's defensive trenchworks.

But it is also a story of heroism, bravery, and loyalty as the last of the Loyalist members of those soon to be infamous legions, fight for their Emperor and the ideals that they believe in. He is pursued by members of his own legion who are part of the betrayal and in desperation puts himself at the mercy of Nathaniel Garro, who is excluded from the assault force and relegated to commanding the frigate Eisenstein due to his injuries. All this is really a excuse for the Warmaster aka Horus to rid himself of some Loyalist within the Legion's ranks - that being; The Emperor's Children, The World Eaters, Death Guard and Sons of Horus aka Luna Wolves. If a refund or reimbursement is payable to you, we will transfer the money using the same method originally used by you to pay for your purchase. I'd have preferred the novels just went along one time scale rather than the next book being set before the events of this one and eventually catching up, but that's just a small issue as, in all fairness, the way things are done does work quite well. A clear plot with stakes both personal (for those about to be bombed) and wider (the bombing is kicking off a galaxy wide revolt). Once again, we spend the most time with Loken and see a lot of the conflict through his perspective.

After listening to an excellent book 1 and a very decent book 2, I initially struggled with the third book as the author's power of description was less compelling for me, little dialogue or drama. I'll get to my pacing rage in a little bit) and I really felt I was with the loyalist characters every step of the way as far heartache and betrayal was concerned. The final battle really seems that way, and there were really fun ideas here and there that would have made for an interesting movie. Counter's writing was fantastic, keeping honest emotions at the forefront during such a grizzly, gory sequence.
