Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the second time, a re-issue by Sony just five short years after its last release. Qualms, niggles, and grumbles aside, I still very much enjoy this film but I’m not blind to its many faults. I don’t think they anticipated my dedication to living up to my end of the bargain as I dutifully read the book while at summer camp that year and loved it. Again it’s visually arresting and I think for all of the stumbles Coppola makes, he makes up for it with two or three great decisions. Silent movies, shadow puppets, back projection, forced perspective, models, make-up, technicolor, cross-fades - it's so very dense with sheer craft.

One of the most high-profile releases in the fall of 1992 was Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of “Dracula,” starring Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves. There’s a music video for the Annie Lennox song, “Love Song for a Vampire,” that plays over the film’s end credits, and a behind-the-scenes piece that has relatively little overlap with the making-of featurette on the Blu-ray disc that’s included in this set. Ultimately, Eiko Ishioka’s original and creatively breathtaking costumes in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” rightfully took the prize. Unlike many adaptations, Bram Stoker’s Dracula follows the novel not only by (at least partially) utilizing an epistolary approach, but also by embracing communications technologies that would have been considered newfangled in 1897.Within any given scene, there are a lot of printed optical effects at play that can affect grain stability, clarity, softness, and other aspects of the image. The font really shouldn’t be that big of an issue, but flipping between discs, the generic white does affect the mood of the film. I was actually intrigued that Copolla and company decided to give him an origin story that seemed fitting for the monster. I guess this is fine if you’ve already listened to it, but both tracks are great and worth getting into so if you’ve never heard it, it’s frustrating not to have them on the 4K disc.

Although at the time of publication we were unable to directly compared the 2017 HDR10 edition with this new Dolby Vision version, we'll be sure to update once that's been done. He chooses eternal perdition because his beloved wife, Elisabeta (also Ryder), has committed suicide, thus incurring her own damnation. Nevertheless, the ways in which Bram Stoker’s Dracula chooses to implement these aspects are very different. While I missed out on seeing it in theaters, my Dad held up his end of the bargain and rented it for me on tape when it was available at our local Video Watch. Like a throwback to something out of John Boorman's Excalibur, Coppola's blood-drenched Romeo and Juliet-inspired setup informs the entire rest of the movie, which somehow manages to evoke the feeling of Stoker's original letter-based structure whilst also remaining resolutely coherent in terms of actual narrative.
