You Cannot Be Serious is McEnroe at his most personal, a no-holds-barred examination of Johnny Mac, the kid from Queens, and his "wild ride" through the world of professional tennis at a boom time when players were treated like rock stars. It's entertaining and McEnroe is a good storyteller but, every once in a while, you get the sense that he would not be easy to like in real life. As for the topic of McEnroe, he just seems like a megalomaniac that expects everyone to like him, throws tantrums when things don't go his way, and has to do something when people stop paying attention to him. In case you didn't notice, to enjoy this book as much as I did, it helps to be a tennis player and fan. P. Putnam's Sons in 2002, with the paperback being released a year later by The Berkley Publishing Group in the U.

The result is a personal odyssey, a mixture of anecdote and reflection which re-evaluates the meaning of success. At the end of a McEnroe commentated match I'm also exhausted after the continuous verbal outpouring. He has continued to compete on the court, winning the ATP Champions Tour a record six times, and has travelled the globe to play in charity events. Either you are poacher turned gamekeeper, and remorseful, or you continue to advocate winning by any means. I'm a huge tennis fan so i stuck with the terrible narration of JMK - The book is informative and i learnt a lot about him however, it went all over the place throughout the whole book. If you met John McEnroe at a cocktail party, you might be awe-struck by the 7-time majors-winning legend, or you might just think he's the same arrogant a-hole he always was, but either way, there's a good chance he'd be one of the smartest guys in the room.

I tried and tried, but in the end, I was the one walking to the net with my head down, while Lendl was smiling goofily, his hands up, jumping around as he sealed his first Slam title. But Seriously is a richly personal account, blending anecdote and reflection with razor sharp and brutally honest opinions. Like the first one, “But Seriously” is a very quick read, has plenty of humor and covers a wide variety of topics in addition to tennis. In this second memoir written by John McEnroe, “But Seriously” fails to meet the standard reached in his first book, “You Cannot Be Serious.
